吴瑞博士是世界生命科学领域的杰出科学家和推动亚洲地区生命科学研究发展的积极倡导者。他创造了DNA排序的第一个方法，并且是DNA细胞重组方面的先驱。吴瑞博士一生还致力于稻米的基因工程，为全世界人民造福。
吴瑞博士为中国和台湾政府以及学术领域作出了巨大的难以抹灭的贡献。他的最重要的贡献是，于二十世纪八十年代，他发起建立了一个名为“CUSBEA”的交流项目， 即中美生物生化科研和应用项目。这一项目在几年中资助了400多名中国学生到美国留学，攻读博士学位，因此，这个项目可以说为中国的学生学者首次开辟了一条海外留学和学成归国工作的道路。
